Gerry Eastman Studds ( GHERR-ee; May 12, 1937 โ October 14, 2006) was an American politician from Massachusetts who served as a Democratic member of the United States House of Representatives from 1973 until 1997. He was the first member of Congress to be openly gay. In 1983, Studds was censured by the House for having sex with a 17-year-old page.
