Sequoyah ( sə-QUOY-yə; Cherokee: ᏍᏏᏉᏯ, Ssiquoya, or ᏎᏉᏯ, Sequoya, pronounced [seɡʷoja]; c. 1770 – August 1843), also known as George Gist or George Guess, was a Native American polymath and neographer of the Cherokee Nation.
